Here is an early and rare antique faience German beer stein with a pewter lid, made circa 1780 to 1810. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim, one of the largest faience factories in Germany.

The stein is beautifully hand painted with birds amongst foliage in gold paints, which have dulled over the 200 plus years. The stein has a stunning pewter lid, which is finely engraved with a band of horses and flowers, above, the lid has the words Gluck, Friende, Segen engraved, which translates into English as Good luck, Friends, Blessings. To the middle of the lid are two hands shaking hands and the finial has two love birds entwined. The stein has a pewter foot rim, which is also nicely engraved.

The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators after it was fired and is so-called “Cold Painted”, it was not fired again after the painting, hence the age related wear.

Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it's faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory - most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s - early 1860s.

The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge.

The stein is in a very good condition for a faience piece of this age. There is also an incised monogram to the base, most likely the decorator’s mark.

A guaranteed original authentic stein.
