Original vintage travel poster from 1957, “Weekend in Paris - Holidays on the French Riviera” A poster published to promote organised holidays in France, including weekends in Paris and 10 days holiday on the French Riviera in St Aygulf holiday village. Colourful and stylised design by Abel showing some of Paris' landmarks in the upper half of the poster including the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame de Paris while in the bottom half, a man with a sunny face is lying on a small patch of sandy beach with the blue water of the Mediterranean sea surrounding him. The French Riviera (known in French as the Côte d'Azur) is the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France, extending from Cassis, on the west to Menton at the France–Italy border in the east, where the Italian Riviera joins. This coastline was one of the first modern resort areas. It began as a winter health resort for the British upper class at the end of the 18th century. With the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, it became the playground and vacation spot of British, Russian, and other aristocrats, such as Queen Victoria, Tsar Alexander II and King Edward VII, when he was Prince of Wales. In the first half of the 20th century, it was frequented by artists and writers, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Francis Bacon, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Somerset Maugham as well as wealthy Americans and Europeans. After World War II, it became a popular tourist destination and convention site.
